Early morning in Wburg, Brooklyn, here. The sunrise is orange melting into pale blue, the simplicity absolutely calm and stunning.
I had organized a reading with Peter Trachtenberg, Mary Gaitskill, and Robert Marshall at a community garden, run by two stoned gay men. Mary and Peter said they were going to read cat pieces, then a few days ago, Peter sent an email saying he can't read something new. I told him he can read whatever he wants to read.

Before heading over, I spent an hour and a half figuring out what to wear. The leather pants seemed to be the most comfortable and attractive choice, than light-weight black plaid shorts or tight black jeans. I wore a red silk jacket embroidered with chinese plum blossoms. Martha wore black jeans and a white shirt and was sick with a cold, but was a trooper. We ate chicken soup for a late lunch.
The tv spot was canceled for the time being, which was just as well.
I arrived at the garden and found a bench among a proliferation of shiso leaves that I staked out for the readers. The garden men were happy to see us. My friends were there and had brought friends. And the other readers drew many people. The small garden filled with over 80 people standing room only. Mary Gaitskill and Peter Trachtenberg arrived together. Mary said in a wispy voice that she was annoyed because she couldn't find the new piece she wanted to read. Could she read another thing that is long? I said, yes, you can read whatever you want and for however long you want since you are going last. Robert Marshall arrived in a good mood and happy to see my friend Elspeth, who is ten years older than us. In a private conversation, Robert said he wants to marry Elspeth, and should he ask her in the garden on bended knee? I think he admires her because she's written history books and he is working on a history book, debunking Carlos Castenedas. He read from this new work.

I volunteered to read first so I could concentrate on my role as host. I was so nervous, that I almost asked the garden men to host... but Peirre was was supposed to introduce me, but had crumpled up the page. I had asked Robert to introduce me, but then Peirre wanted to. I was patient when he tested the mike during my reading... The mike testing went very badly for the first several minutes, with the mike squeaking. I worked triple hard to keep my focus and read. I read a sex scene with a joke about the fire spelling out words, or spilling outwards... then the beginning of a long funeral scene. When I read the funeral scene, I felt like my head was filled with light. Later, Martha told me who laughed when and who gasped in tears in response to the funeral scene.

Then I sang the lullaby sleep song from Mary Poppins, owning the song by half way through.
I introduced Robert, and realized that I enjoyed hosting.

I said in my intro that Peter's subject matter was so emotionally weighted that he was like a deep sea diver wearing a wetsuit of empathy. Someone in the audience said, "Awww." Peter read something non-fiction and confessional. Mary read a wacky fictional piece about the astral plane, with political and religious figures. She enjoyed reading playfully, and relaxed.
After the reading a tough friend told me she wept during my reading of the funeral scene. Later, Robert called it a Cry-umph, like a triumph, with crying.

Matthew Sharpe, Christopher Bram, Sara Jones, and some other writers were in the audience.
The evening was luminous.

We arrived in Delhi at 9 pm. Sai Baba was giving a public darshan at an open stadium 15 minutes drive from the airport. We arrived and the event was completely over. We didn’t despair but were disappointed.
Later, we read online that he was heading to Shimla. 111 degrees in Delhi. Should we follow Sai Baba to Shimla? The most expensive mountain resort town… hmmm. I heard the John Cale song “You’re a ghost, na na na na an na na na na na.” In my head, when ever we were going to make a rash move. We just arrived in Delhi and must stay and get to understand where we were before moving on. We visited with Maya Kosvskaya at an art opening and met people that we would like to be friends with in the future. People who reminded us of our favorite people in nyc.
So, I opened the Rumi poetry book for guidance about how day three is going. The poem was something about stopping at a teahouse on the road instead of making it to our destination. I fell asleep wondering about the meaning of this poem, then woke up at 2 am and researched online to see where Sai Baba would be the next day. I was very surprised and pleased that he was scheduled to lecture in Delhi once again, the next day, a Saturday.

My favorite conversation that Saturday was with a nine year old girl named Nakila who sat a few ladies away from Martha and I in the crowd of women waiting for the Darshan. The women and men sat separate from each other, packed on the floor, the women like sardines. No water allowed, we drank tap water handed out by the attending disciples. I still remember the faces of some of the women sitting near us. In between Nakila and I were a few elderly and thirty something women who listened in while Nakila and I talked. She complimented me on the scarves we’d bought outside and across the street since we were required to wear a shawl like thing. They said, cover yourself. I thought, what am I covering? Breasts? We found pink and orange scarves. Martha’s had rainbow holographic dots.
Nakila sat on her mom’s lap and initiated a conversation. She’d been to Amrika to visit her aunt. Nakila said, “In India you get charged 200 rupis for something I would pay 50 rupis. In America, I would pay the same price as you.”
I said, “Yes, you would. But the real question is, is it worth for me to bother arguing with the person in India charging me much more?”
Nakila said, “I don’t know. In America, if a dog is hit by a car, the police come. Everyone stops to take care of the dog. In India, no one stops, and no one cares.”
We had a charming calm discussion about that and other things.
I said, “Nakila. In Delhi, the drivers use their horns constantly to communicate their position on the road and to say, I’m coming through, or I’m passing you from behind, or I am cutting you off, beep, beep. In America, the drivers never use their horns except as a warning of danger. Beep. Beep.”
After some time had passed, Nakila said, “Shelley. Shelley. How can you be so quiet?”
I said, “When you’re quiet, you can listen. To what’s around you, but also to what’s inside of you.”
We were most likely among a handful of westerners if there were any others at all, with the women packed in like sardines in the tent in 111 degree weather. Did I mention that already?
I looked over to see how Nakila was doing. The women around her told her that I was calling her. Then she called out, “Shelley, Shelley, these people around me said you called?”
This happened twice.
I said, “No, I didn’t call you, Nakila. I just looked over to see how you are doing. How are you?”
Nakila said, “These people have it in for me. They keep teasing me.”
I said, No one has it in for you!”
She disagreed.
After Sai Baba gave darshan, and everyone stood up, an elderly woman, maybe in her late 80s, approached and chatted away to me in Hindi. She kept touching the top of my head, maybe because I got the transmission? She kept chatting, and smiling enthusiastically. I smiled back but said, “I don’t understand what you are saying.” She was less enthusiastic, but smiled anyway, then hugged me. Then she hugged me and Martha at the same time. We were all happy. Others said, “Puttaparti? You are from Puttaparthi?”
That is the home of Sai Baba, where he has done a lot for his town.

We traveled to Delhi, Hardiwar, Rishikesh, and Kathmandu. We stopped at many sacred sites without the camera, including the Sufi dargahs of Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, and Hazryat Inayat Khan in Delhi. We joined thousands as the only westerners in a tent to receive darshan from Sai Baba. We were told to wear scarfs, so we bought two glittery pink and orange wraps in which made us more conspicuous, like Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in Some Like it Hot.

I just returned from visiting India and Nepal. During our few days in Nepal, we visited and did many interesting things. During the first night there, we saw a protest on the street. The protesters marched down the avenue carrying torches and sticks. According to local newspapers, these protesters were 'Maoists', stating that the protests included people that were forced from their countryside villages under threat of violence. The use of force is never the way to a peaceful governance. I don't understand why all other media sources are missing this point.

TWO AUGUSTS IN A ROW IN A ROW is about women’s struggles to have a voice in the world. The protagonist is a drag king and student of magic, who lives in Brooklyn, circa 9/11/01. Other drag kings lip sync but my protagonist, who also works as a translator and transcriber to a dead silent film actress, discovers her singing voice.

The workshop with Lydia Davis was excellent.

My fiction on Zingmagazine is about ten years old, people. Here's the first paragraph of my second novel: Two Augusts in a Row in a Row.

Chapter 1.
The solitary reason I can write now is because of the two hawks mating on the roof above my apartment on the top floor. I hear them screech and occasionally they look over the edge of the roof into my apartment. Other birds, as small as sparrows, knock on my window, not a click, click with a claw or beak, but a thump, thump of the top of their heads, asking I don’t know what. I can’t tell today. Maybe tomorrow. Why do the birds knock on my window? To get in? Possibly to remind me to continue with my studies of magic? 1:11 am and 1:11 pm, I take note of these times of the day. Or at least on a 2:22, or 5:11, or 4:44. Or 6:66. Not really the latter.

MOTHER, MAY I? marks the return of the College Art Association's QUEER CAUCUS back to NYC for its annual conference. It is an exhibition with a fixed gaze on the inter-generational relationships in art and life. It's about permission and precedent: in making art, bending gender, and claiming the family we choose. Over twenty-five artists will participate, choosing "art" mothers and children, queering traditional notions of generation, sex and family.

Painter Blaine Anderson chooses multi-disciplined artist Ernesto Pujol to mother him. Shelly Marlow chooses her biological mother and quilter, Beatrice Marlow. Larry Schulte chooses his late aunt, Mae Morrison as the mother of his artist's life. Photographer and mother, Allen Frame, picks Jeanine Oleson as his art daughter.

Autumn Lentil Stew

Here's my delish soup recipe:

1 large onion
6 cloves of garlic
1 cup of dry lentils
1 large organic butternut squash
1 carrot
2 parsnips
1 teaspoon of sea salt
1 pinch of cayenne pepper
1 dash of dry rosemary
3 tablespoons of vodka (from Siberia with deer antler or wine or rice vinegar)
1 pinch of dry peppermint tea
3-4 cups of water
3 tablespoons of olive oil

Cook dry lentils until tender-25 minutes. Drain water and set lentils aside. Chop then saute onions in the olive oil until translucent. Throw in garlic cloves. Chop butternut squash into one inch pieces, then toss in. Add lentils. Stir.
Add water according to how thick you want the soup. Chop and add carrot and parsnips. Stir. Add rest of ingredients, (vodka, rosemary, cayenne, sea salt.) Stir, turn heat down to simmer. Cook for an hour or until desired consistency.

Yum.

With the largely unpublicized withdrawal of the last legal obstacle to the M3 Motorway on the 6th October, The Save Tara Skryne Valley Campaign is calling on all those concerned about this national tragedy to attend The Save Tara Valley Awareness March in Navan on Saturday, 4th November at 2.00pm sharp!

Michael D.Higgins, TD gave his full support to the March last week, saying "I believe that this is an appalling decision which will affect not only this generation, but generations to come! There needs to be a change made in legislation to stop decisions being made which will have such an influence on future generations of Irish people. This has important implications not only for the people of Meath, but for people throughout Ireland". Deputy Higgins was responsible for the first Tara Discovery Programme when he was Minister of Arts, Culture and Gaeltacht Affairs.

At this moment in Irish history, never before has it been so important for people to voice their objection to the needless destruction of Ireland's most sacred site, simply to facilitate a motorway which will be of no benefit to the people of Meath. With TWO tolls and inevitably leading into the already badly congested Blanchardstown roundabout, the M3 will bring unspeakable destruction to Ireland's heritage with no relief to the stressed commuter. As part of the M3 a massive interchange will be built at Blundelstown at the foot of the Hill of Tara and this will be floodlit 24
hours a day!

Widespread development is also planned along the route of the Tara/Skryne Valley. The March is also intended to bring attention to the fact that viable alternatives do exist, such as an integrated transport system. Ends.

Talking with a high school art teacher at the Bliss restaurant, she mentioned feeling down lately. I asked if the kids at school cheer her up. She said, “No. They are all doom and gloom, too. Can you blame them?”
I said, “This is like the 50’s with all of the atom bomb threats and the cold war. There is always someone saying it’s the end of the world.”
“Hmm. That’s true.”
“Yes, and the government makes use of this fear to take control and abuse power.”
“So there is hope?”
“Yes. It’s not the end of the world. I heard we were slated for the end, but the powers that be said since more people are evolving quickly that we can go on after all. So it’s worth keeping on with your aspirations. This is not the end. There is hope.”

Darling beautiful Martha in the countryside! Yohji the cat caught and ate 6 animals in the past two days. I hope it was just the full moon driving him and that he's calm now. I got a baby bunny out of his mouth. The bunny fit on my gloved hand. I pet it and talked to it, until the bunny calmed down, twitched it's nose and hopped out of my hand. It was so nice to hold the little bunny.

MOSCOW Conflict

. Perestroika=when the Russian government lifted its ban on gays and shamans. When I visited Siberia last summer, I had a feeling that after 18 years, perestroika still hasn't completely taken hold.

The positive thing about the situation in Moscow is that representatives of an international Gay/Les community were present. The whole world is watching and are saddened along with Lesbian, Bi, Gay and Trans people of Russia. You are no longer isolated.

we have a crisis. lately few lesbiclubs had been smashed in Moskow. few people had precipices, victims were there. but press and means mass information are silenting about it. on the days skinheads were beating 2 lesbi in Piter, close by nightclub "3L". our government with church are "rising" against us. skinheads follow after us. we are afraiding of our people. we are unknowing what to be further. we are afraiding that "war" will begin. we are having not enought informaition. but we are geting ready for the worst. maybe we having exeggeration.

Yes, I was there... I was with my girlfriend, and we joined a small group of the Raging Grannies against the war... and their granddaughters. They chanted their own songs (http://www.janrainwater.com/lyrics.htm) with megaphones in front of loud Vets Against the War who were megaphoning a sound off.

In Chinatown, the Vets sounded off: We Love Grannies Against the War! Sound off, One Two....

...and the Grannies sang a love song back to the Vets...

a very touching moment.

Regarding Maryanne's question about the ghost:
The ghost visited me in a lucid dream. I was on a boat, a large out of control boat. Once I solved the problem of the speeding boat, by saying we should drop the engine or put a hole in the bottom to slow it down, the scene changed. I was in the middle of motorcycle traffic then a horse race, shutting my eyes, then opening up and I was in a horse driven carriage from the 16th century passing by people that had the plague. I was awake in the dream the whole time and aware that someone was taking me on a trip. I was very disturbed once I opened my eyes to wake up. This took place in a fancy old hotel in Rome. We were staying within walking distance of the writer that an old ghost had punched in the nose. I wasn't sure I could help her after meeting this old ghost because I'd only dealt with 100 or 200 year old ghosts in America. None from 500 years ago. The young writer canceled saying she was sick.
I'm putting together a package for the italian editors and will include a bag of smudging sage for our young writer friend to burn for protection.
